The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the cathedral church of Rome. And did you know it is the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope. It is also the oldest cathedral in Rome! Many of the Roman Catholics have given this the title of ECUMENICAL MOTHERCHURCH.

Many of our clients have been lucky enough to see the Pope giving mass from this baroque facade of the basilica of Sain John Lateran. The basilica sits on a site which was occupied during the early Roman empire. Every Pope from Miltiades occupied the Lateran Palace until the reign of the french pope Clement V.

This is an area rich with religious history. Come and visit not only Saint John Lateran Church, but also the Lateran Palace and Holy Staircase. In front of the Lateran Palace is an obolisque built by Tuhmosis III

The Holy Steps

A famous Papal Sanctuary which is located next to the Basilica. The Holy Staircase is believed to be the actual steps that Jesus climbed the day he was sentenced to death. It is said that these stairs where ordered and sent from Jerusalem to Rome by Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine The Great in 334 AD. The Stairs are known as the Scala Pilati, in other words Pilates Stairway or the Scala Sancti Holy Stairway.
