Piazza del Popolo

The Piazza is one of the most famous places in Rome as the Piazza del Popolo translated means Peoples Square. This is a very enjoyable and interesting part of Rome! It is found inside of the nothern gate of the Aurelian walls, the start of the acient Roman road to Ariminum and the most important route to the north. You will see the Piazza is designed in a neoclassical style by architect Giuseppe Valadier between 1811 and 1822.

In the centre of the Piazza is Rameses II, as egyptian obelish from Heliopolis. This is the second oldest and one of the tallest obelisks in Rome. The obelisk was brought to Rome by order of Augustus in 10BC and was origionally set down in Circus Maximus. It was later moved by architect engineer Domenico Fontana in 1589.

There are also the twin churces, the Chiese Gemelle of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1681) and Santa Maria Montesanto (1679) began by Carlo Rainaldi and completed by Bernini and Carlo Fontana.

Fountains Stand on each side of the Piazza. For centuries the Piazza del Popolo was a place for public executions the last of which took place in 1826.
WOW! We can see the Romans really knew how to enjoy Rome!- TIP!- Why not visit Piazza del Popolo and enjoy the shopping which is linked on the north and south sides of the piazza.

Piazza Navona

This is a large square in Rome where you can really enjoy the entire day.
Previously there was a city market which transfered to the Campidoglio. The Piazza has sculptural and architectural creations by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the famous fontana dei Quattro Fiumi Fountain of the Four Rivers, 1651 by Barromini and Girolamo Rainaldi. Also the church of Saint Agnese by Pietro da Cortona.

Since the 1869 when the market was moved to the famous Campo dei Fiori, the square has been home to theatrical and costume shows, horse races, and buffalo jousts. Quite recently you will find pleasant market stalls, solo theatrical acts, artists and musicians. Around the edge of the Piazza enjoy Rome by relaxing enjoying the sights and trying the delights of one of many of the Italian bars and cafes!

Catacombs of Rome

These are the acient Jewish and Christian underground burial places near Rome.
The Etruscans used to bury their dead in underground chambers. It was then the Christians who carried on this tradition. It was done as they did not want to cremate the dead due to the belief of resurrection.

Roman law forbade buriel within the city. The Christians therefore carved through soft rock outside the city.
