Colosseum

The Colosseum, otherwise known as the Flavian Amphitheater, was begun by Vespesian and inagurated by Titus in 80AD. Located between the Esquilin and Caelian Hills it was the first permenant amphitheater built in Rome. Its momumental size and grandure as well as its practicality for producing spectacles and controlling crowds makes the Colosseum one of the wonders of the world! It is three tiered seating 50,000 spectators in a central ellipitcal arena. It had approximately 80 entrances allowing crowds to enter and leave quickly.



Roman Forum

The Roman Forum was the political and economic center of Rome in the 7th century BC. It was abbandoned at the end of the 4th century. The Roman Forum is located between the Capitoline and Palatine Hills. It is important because of its political, religious and judicial buildings. There are many major temples and sanctuaries in the Forum which include the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Saturn and the Temple of Vesta.






Trevi Fountain

This is a must!- The Trevi Fountain a wonderful fountain in Rococo style, embelishing trees, tritons, sea horses and Neptune. The tradition is to throw a coin into the fountain and make a wish.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps is a set of stairs in Rome ramping a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti at the top. Most famous for the spring fashion shows, the stairs are a popular evening gathering place for tourists and romans alike. The steps were designed by Francesco de Sanctis after generations of heated discusions. During Christmas time a 19th century criv is assembled on the first landing of the staircase. During May half of the monument is covered by pots of azaleas. In the Piazza at the base is the early baroque fountain called the Barcaccia- ugly boat often credited to Pietro Bernini. Also in the Piazza at the corner on the right as one begins to climb the steps is the house where the English poet John Keats lived. It is now a museum dedicated to his memory. The museum is full of memorabilia of the English Romantic generation.





Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of the greatest spiritual buildings of the World. It was built as a Roman Temple and later concecrated as a Roman Catholic church. Its momumental porch origionally faced a retangular temple courtyard, the only natural light enters through an unglazed oculus at the center of the dome. As the sun moves striking paterns of light illuminate the walls and floors.





Capitonline Hill

The Capitoline Hill or Campidoglio was the center of the political, social and religious life in acient Rome. The most sacred of the hills of rome, even though it is the smallest. It was the site of a temple for the Capitoline Triad started by Romes 5th king and considered one of the largest and most beautiful temples in the city...although today very little of it still remains.



Domus Aurea

Domus Aurea is latin for Golden House. It was this golden house that infact gave modern language the world palace.
Built of brick with the use of extensive gold leaf that gave it its name "The Golden House" stuccoed ceilings were applied with semi precious stones and veneers of ivory.

Nero has been quoted as saying on entering his golden house Good! Now at last I can begin to live like a human being! This house was a party villa with 300 rooms and no sleeping quarters. Nero really knew how to enjoy rome!

Trajans Market and Forum

Markets known to archaeologists as the worlds first shopping mall. It is still in a wonderfully preserved form. It iis an area east of Piazza Venezia and was developed in the 2nd Century AD. Includes Greek Libraries, temple and Trajans column.

Baths of Caracalla

This shows you how the Romans enjoyed bathing many years ago. The baths of Caracalla are the best preserved roman imperial baths. You can imagine the changing rooms of these acient bathers, the excercise areas and the libraries. There are wonderful brick walls and mosiacs still in existance, so you can imagine the great Roman bathing tradition.
